Kalyan-Dombivli Demolition Case.
Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has started the demolition process of 58 illegal buildings. Six of the 58 buildings have been completely demolished, while four have been partially razed. The demolition drive is expected to be completed within the next three months. These buildings were constructed by property developers after forging Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA) certificates. This step comes after the Bombay High Court’s last month’s order.
The KDMC’s demolition drive will impact around 6,500 people. The drive will begin by disconnecting electricity and water connections before demolishing the structures, as people currently reside in these buildings.
According to media sources, the municipal body has identified 65 illegal buildings in total. However, only 58 buildings fall under the jurisdiction of KMDC, while the others are under the purvie of Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation’s (MIDC) and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Out of the 58, one of the buildings was not constructed, leaving 57 illegal structures in total for KMDC to demolish.
According to Dr Indu Rani Jakhar, KDMC commissioner, the cost of the demolition will be recovered from the developers, which will serve as an example for future developers/landowners.
This scam was revealed after Kalyan’s social worker and architect, Sandeep Patil, lodged a complaint with KDMC. Later, the case was moved to the high court, as the corporation reportedly did not take any action.
However, KDMC lodged two FIRs against property developers following the high court’s intervention. Thereafter, the Thane police swung into action by forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT). It arrested 15 people, including developers and those creating fake documents.
KDMC’s demolition drive underscores the Bombay High Court’s crucial role in ensuring urban governance. This action will likely act as a deterrent against fraudulent practices by builders. It will also encourage home buyers to do their due diligence before buying properties.
